Eat it

How to Make Mushroom Chocolate

We know a guy who is literally a government-employed scientist conducting psilocybin trials for the treatment of PTSD, Anxiety, and Depression, etc. When he’s not in the lab, though, he’s at home making magic mushroom chocolate for his friends and the friends of his friends because that’s the kind of good-natured, spread-the-love, hell-of-a-guy he is. For this psychedelic issue of POSSESSED, we dreamed up a new nutrition-related department called EAT IT, and for this first installment of EAT IT, we had our extraordinary scientist friend explain how to make Magic Mushroom chocolate at home. For obvious reasons, our buddy needs to remain anonymous, so let’s just call him Paul.

Hi, Paul! How do you make Magic Mushroom chocolate?

Hey… Did you just call me ‘Paul’?

Yeah, because—

You can call me Chris.

Yeah, I know, but you need to be anonymous, right?

Sure, but just don’t say my last name or where I work, or where I live. You don’t have to call me ‘Paul’.

What about Steve?

[Laughs] No, just call me Chris. I’m Chris.

Okay. Chris, how do you make Magic Mushroom chocolate?

Well, you could Google it. It’s pretty easy.

Yeah, but we wanted to talk to a professional.

Okay. Well, first, you need some dried psilocybin mushrooms and—

Where do you get those?

You grow them, you go out foraging for them, you buy some from someone, whatever.

Where do you get yours?

I grow them.

At the lab?

No, at home. This has nothing to do with my work, by the way. This is just something I started doing for myself and my friends, and now—

And now you’re a chocolatier.

[Laughs] I guess, yeah. But the process is very straightforward. You could really just Google it.

Right, but when you Google ‘How to make weed brownies’, there’s, like, a million people arguing about the best method of extracting the THC and all that.

Well, it’s not like that at all. When you make pot brownies, there’s a process of decarboxylation. With mushrooms, it’s just a case of mixing psilocybin with chocolate.

What is decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is the process of removing carbon atoms from a carbon chain. In the case of cannabis, you’re applying heat to convert Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid into Tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the stuff that gets you high. Mushrooms don’t need to be heated to release the psychoactive ingredient, though—you just eat them.

Then why make chocolate?

It’s nicer to eat chocolate than it is dried mushroom. The chocolate is just the vessel delivering the psilocybin. The thing with chocolate, though, is you’re using powdered mushroom, so the dosage will vary between actual dried mushroom and mushroom chocolate.

' I would hate for someone to make their own chocolate based on this and to have a negative experience because they had more than they could handle.'

Okay, so what do you do?

First, you’ll need electronic scales, a coffee grinder or some sort of grinder, chocolate, a chocolate mold, and a stovetop. And, of course, dried psilocybin mushrooms. Getting your chocolate-to-psilocybin ratios is the most critical part. For example, you don’t want to eat 500 grams of chocolate to ingest two grams of psilocybin. That would be horrible. Unless you really like chocolate.

What ratios do you use?

Well, I make quite large quantities, so to pare that down to something one of your readers could do for themselves at home… Well, firstly, it depends on the individual that is planning on eating the chocolate. Psilocybin is an incredible compound, but also a compound that needs to be treated with caution and respect. I would hate for someone to make their own chocolate based on this and to have a negative experience because they had more than they could handle.

Right, well, what’s a conservative estimate on the ratios?

Well, a moderate or medium-strength dose of psilocybin is about one to three grams of dried mushroom. So, let’s just say you were going to use a Freddo Frog chocolate mold and—

And a Freddo Frog is a chocolate snack shaped like a frog.

It’s just a chocolate frog.

Right.

So, let’s say you were going to make magic chocolate frogs, and each frog contains a medium, manageable dosage of psilocybin, which is about two grams of dried mushroom, but for this, we’ll blow it out to three grams and tell our friends not to eat the whole thing in one go.

'The most important thing, though, is to get the ratios right and to not overdo it. Always treat psilocybin—or any psychedelics, for that matter—with the utmost respect.'

Have half and see how you feel.

Actually, no. Let’s just make it two grams per frog and tell our friends to have half to start with.

Play it safe.

Yes. So, a chocolate frog, I’m guessing, would be somewhere between fifteen and twenty grams, but let’s say for the sake of argument that each frog weighs twenty grams, and you want to infuse each of these frogs with about two grams of dried mushroom.

Okay.

So, let’s say you were going to make magic chocolate frogs, and each frog contains a medium, manageable dosage of psilocybin, which is about two grams of dried mushroom, but for this, we’ll blow it out to three grams and tell our friends not to eat the whole thing in one go.

Okay.

And let’s also say you wanted to make—I don’t know—twenty frogs.

Right.

So, you would need twenty times twenty grams of chocolate...

500 grams.

400 grams.

Right.

And then you would need two times twenty grams of dried mushroom.

40 grams.

Correct. So, that was the hardest part. Now all you have to do is melt down your 400 grams of chocolate. You do this on the stove by placing the chocolate inside a heatproof bowl or jug and then placing that inside a saucepan full of water, medium heat. You don’t want it too hot or the chocolate will burn. While the chocolate is melting, weigh out your forty grams of mushroom and grind it up as fine as you can. You want to reduce it to a very fine powder.

Okay

And then, you take the melted chocolate off the stove and slowly mix in the powder. Be careful not to leave any lumps; you need to really mix it through evenly. Then you pour it out into your chocolate frog mold, let it cool on the counter for an hour or so, refrigerate, and you’re done.

That’s it?

Yes,

That’s seriously all you need to do.

Yes. I told you you could’ve just Googled it. The most important thing, though, is to get the ratios right and to not overdo it. Always treat psilocybin—or any psychedelics, for that matter—with the utmost respect. Tread lightly. Respect the mushroom and it will respect you.

Thanks, Chris.

You’re welcome.

RECIPE

What You’ll Need

  • Electronic scales
  • Chocolate frog mold
  • 400-500 grams of chocolate
  • Electric grinder (coffee grinder or similar)
  • 40 grams of dried psilocybin mushroom
  • Saucepan
  • Heatproof bowl or jug (Pyrex)

Instructions

  • Grind mushrooms down to a fine powder.
  • Place heatproof bowl/jug inside saucepan, then fill saucepan with water so that it sits at least an inch below the lip of the bowl/jug (you don’t want to get water inside the bowl/jug).
  • Place chocolate inside bowl/jug, then place saucepan on low heat to melt chocolate slowly.
  • When the chocolate is melted, slowly mix through mushroom powder, being careful to break any clumps and get an even distribution through liquid.
  • Pour chocolate mushroom mix into frog molds and leave to cool for one hour.
  • Place molds in refrigerator to harden.
  • Once set, eat half a frog. Wait at least an hour to see what happens.
  • If you feel good—go for a run and see what all the fuss is about.
