This playlist from Chase ‘Hellahammer’ Mason—frontman of Arizonian death metal outfit Gatecreeper—is very, very interesting. At one end of the spectrum, you’ve got the aural onslaught of Swiss metal pioneers Celtic Frost (très brutal), but then, listen long enough and you’ll discover Mr. Mason has also thrown in Bananarama’s 1983 hit ‘Cruel Summer’. To paraphrase Lou Reed, that’s like serving a bowl of ice cream with bacon strips across the top.
But that’s what makes this collection of songs so listenable. Sure, you’ll be left bloodied and bruised by Dismember’s ‘Casket Garden’, but rest assured the cool, rejuvenating waters of ‘Wishing’ by Electric Light Orchestra will soothe you soon enough. Chase’s playlist really is an eclectic (yet metal-heavy) horn of plenty, but all of these tunes do have one thing in common: they fuckin’ rüle.
